Avoid bubbles when installing solar film

You can tell right away when an installation is not working properly. Small bubbles along the edge, a larger bubble in the middle of the window or a milky area that never seems to settle. Anyone who wants to avoid bubbles when installing window film doesn't just need to work carefully - they need to understand why bubbles occur and what actually makes the difference between an okay result and a really clean finish.

The good news is that most bubbles can be prevented. The problem is rarely a matter of bad luck. In most cases, it is due to three things: dirt on the glass, the wrong amount of mounting fluid or the film being moved and pressed in the wrong way. Add a poor fit and the risk increases immediately.

Why bubbles occur during installation


A bubble is basically something that has remained between the glass and the film. It can be air, water, dust or small particles from, for example, fabric, paper or old glue residue. If the bubble looks clearly round and shiny, it is often air or liquid. If it looks like a small dot or bump, it is more often dirt.

It is also common to confuse temporary moisture marks with real bubbles. Immediately after installation, some areas may look uneven because the liquid has not yet been completely squeezed out or has not had time to evaporate. This does not always mean that something has gone wrong. However, clear air pockets and visible particles should be taken seriously immediately, as they rarely disappear on their own.

Preparation is more important than the installation itself


Anyone who stresses out cleaning almost always ends up paying for it later. The glass must be completely clean, not just visually clean. Small remnants of dust, pollen, nicotine, dog hair or old cleaning agents are enough to create unevenness under the film.

Always start by cleaning the window thoroughly and work extra carefully along the edges. This is where dirt collects and this is also where many bubbles start. Many beginners use too little mounting liquid for fear that the film will slide around too much. The result is often the opposite of what you want. Too little liquid causes the film to pinch too early, which increases the risk of wrinkles, uneven pressure and air pockets remaining.

At the same time, too much liquid is not optimal either. If it gets too wet, it becomes more difficult to get the film to lie still and even more difficult to squeeze everything out evenly. The technique is therefore about wetting enough to be able to position the film correctly, but not so much that you lose control.

What usually works best is to keep both the glass and the adhesive side evenly moistened during application, and then work systematically with a squeegee to squeeze out the liquid in specific directions. Random strokes easily create pockets that become trapped.

How to avoid bubbles when installing window film in practice


The application itself should be calm and methodical. Once the film is on the glass, you first need to check that it is correctly positioned in height and sideways. If you start squeegeeing before the film is correctly positioned, you will quickly lock in a bad position.

The pressure with the squeegee should be even and clear, but not so hard that the film is pulled out of position. Start centrally and work out towards the edges and corners. The important thing is not to work quickly, but that each stroke actually pushes air and liquid out in the same direction. If you jump between different zones, you can easily leave pockets between the strokes.

On curved or more challenging windows, even better control is required. Bubbles often occur there because the film does not make proper contact over the entire surface from the beginning. In this case, it helps to work in smaller sections and secure one part at a time, instead of trying to squeeze everything out at once.

Bubbles in the middle or along the edges


Bubbles in the middle of the window are often due to liquid or air not being squeezed out in a sufficiently clear pattern. It can also be due to the film being applied unevenly from the start. Edge bubbles are more often due to dirt, poor drying or the film not having proper adhesion near the strips.

Edges are particularly sensitive because they are exposed to mechanical stress and are often more difficult to access with even pressure. If the film is not applied cleanly from the start, the risk that the problem will become more visible after a few days increases.

Fit reduces the margin of error immediately


An underestimated reason for bubbles is that the film simply does not fit the window well enough. If you work with metered material and cut it yourself, there is always the risk that the shape will be slightly wrong, that corners need to be forced into place or that the margins will be uneven. This increases the need for correction during installation, and each additional correction increases the risk of dust, creases and bubbles.
