Guide to tint levels on car windows for the right choice

A darker window can give your car a clearer look, less visibility and a cooler interior. But the right choice is not about choosing the darkest window film. What does tinting degree mean on car windows?

Tinting degree describes how much visible light is let through the window with installed window film. The measurement is usually given as VLT, Visible Light Transmission, in percent. A high VLT number means that a lot of light passes through the window and that the tint is light. A low VLT number means that less light passes through and that the window is perceived as darker.

A film with 70 percent VLT is therefore relatively light, while 5 percent VLT is very dark. This is a common source of misunderstanding, as some people describe the same film as, for example, "70 percent tinting" when they actually mean that 70 percent of the light is blocked. When comparing window tinting, VLT is the clearest value to base your decision on.

The finished result is also influenced by the car's original glass. Many modern windows are already lightly tinted from the factory, often with a slight green, blue or grey tint. If you install film on already tinted glass, the actual light transmission will be lower than the film's stated VLT value. Therefore, you should not judge the tinting degree based on the product image alone.

Common tinting degrees and how they are perceived

For rear side windows and rear window, most car owners choose between 5, 15, 20, 35 and 50 percent VLT. Which level is best depends on how you use the car, how much visibility you want to reduce and how important rear visibility is when it is dark.

50 percent VLT - discreet original feel

50 percent VLT lets through about half of the visible light. Tinting with this level provides lighter privacy protection without significantly changing the appearance of the car. It is well suited for those who want to achieve a more uniform look, reduce glare for rear seat passengers or make the trunk less visible without having dark windows.

This is often a safe choice on smaller cars and sedans, where a very dark rear window can make the car look visually rear-heavy. Visibility through the window remains good even at night and in the rain.

35 percent VLT - balanced choice for the everyday car

35 percent VLT is a clear, but not extreme, tint. It reduces visibility noticeably and gives a more pronounced expression, while you normally have usable visibility out the rear side windows and rear window in the dark.

For family cars, station wagons and daily commutes, 35 percent is often the most balanced level. Rear passengers get less direct sunlight, child seats and luggage are less visible from the outside and parking maneuvers are easier than with the darkest options. If you are unsure between a light and a dark tint, 35 percent is a practical middle choice.

20 and 15 percent VLT - clear privacy protection

At 20 or 15 percent VLT, the windows become clearly dark from the outside. You get effective privacy protection and an appearance that suits many SUVs, station wagons, vans and sportier models. The solar film also helps to reduce the light for those sitting in the back.

The disadvantage is mainly visibility. In daylight, the level works well for most people, but in bad weather, in unlit parking lots or when reversing at night, you may have to rely more on mirrors, camera and parking sensors. If the car does not have a rear-view camera, 20 percent is often a wiser choice than 15 percent.

5 percent VLT - maximum darkness

5 percent VLT is sometimes called limo tinting because the window becomes very dark. From the outside, the visibility is minimal, and the result gives a powerful, shielded appearance. This may be right for some show cars, work vehicles or large SUVs where maximum privacy is a priority.

For most everyday cars, however, 5 percent is a clear compromise. Rear visibility becomes limited in the dark, and rearview mirrors or a camera become crucial when maneuvering. So don't choose the darkest level just because it looks good in product photos. Think about how the car will be used on a dark winter evening, not just on a sunny summer day.

Guide to tinting degrees on car windows and Swedish regulations

The regulations are decisive for where you can install solar film. On the windshield, you are normally not allowed to install solar film in the driver's field of vision. In front of the driver, the windshield must have at least 75 percent light transmission, while the front side windows must let in at least 70 percent light. Since the original glass already absorbs some light, there is rarely room to install visibly tinted film on the front windows and still meet the requirements.

Rear side windows and the rear window have different requirements. There, tinting is often used for privacy, comfort and appearance. If the rear window is tinted so dark that the interior rear-view mirror does not provide sufficient visibility, the car normally needs to have functioning exterior rear-view mirrors on both sides.

Inspection requirements and interpretations can be affected by the type of vehicle, the original light transmission of the glass and how the film is installed. Always measure the total light transmission if you are considering film close to the limit values on the front windows. For a simple and safe choice, many choose to tint only the windows behind the B-pillar.

Choose by car type, use and equipment

A tint level that works perfectly on a large SUV can be unnecessarily dark on a hatchback. The size of the windows, the car's body color, interior and original tinting affect the overall impression. Dark interiors and dark glass enhance the feeling of tinting, while a light interior often makes the film feel less dark from the inside.

If you have small children in the back seat, 20 to 35 percent VLT is often a good combination of shielding and visibility. If you drive a lot in city traffic, parking garages or on country roads without street lighting, 35 or 50 percent is easier to live with. For transporting tools, equipment or other cargo where privacy protection weighs more, 15 or 20 percent may be more relevant.

A rearview camera also changes the conditions, but it does not eliminate the need for visibility through the windows. The camera lens can get dirty, be blinded by bright lights or have poor depth perception. Choose a tint that you still feel comfortable with when the technology is not up to par.

Darker film does not automatically provide better heat protection

Tinting and heat reduction are two different properties. A dark colored film can effectively reduce light, but a modern carbon or nano ceramic film can provide strong heat reduction even at a lighter VLT level. It is the material's ability to reject solar energy, especially infrared heat, that determines how much the interior is exposed to the sun.

This means that you do not need to choose 5 percent VLT to get better comfort during the summer. A 35 or 50 percent film in a higher material class may be a better buy if you want to maintain good visibility but reduce heat, glare and UV exposure. For many, this is the most important difference between budget film and a more performance-oriented solution.

Fit affects the end result

The correct tint level does not look professional if the film is cut incorrectly, has too large gaps or ends up unevenly against the edges of the window.
